VPN is an extra layer that runs on top of your regular network connection. You need to first establish a connection to the Internet and then to the VPN server before you can access the services available through Pomona's VPN.
Note: If you are using Pomona's faculty/staff dial-up Internet access, you do not need VPN.
Creating the VPN Connection (first time users)
- To set up VPN, you first need to create a new connection in the Network Connection Wizard. To do this, click on
Start and choose Control Panel. (If you don't see Control Panel, select Settings and then choose Control Panel). If your Control Panel is in Category View, you'll see groupings of settings. Click Switch to Classic View on the side panel of the window.
- Once you are in Classic View, double-click the
Network Connections Control Panel.
- Then choose
Create a New Connection from the Network Tasks panel on the left.
- Click
Next to start the New Connection Wizard, and then enter the following:
- Choose
Connect to the Network at my workplace and click Next.
- Select
Virtual Private Network connection and click Next.
- Type
Pomona VPN for the connection name and click Next.
- Specify the Pomona VPN server, which is vpn.pomona.edu and click
Next.
- Choose
My use only and click Next.
- Check the
Create a Shortcut on the Desktop box for convenient access to VPN and then Finish to complete the wizard.
Connecting to the VPN Server
VPN does not establish Internet access. To use Pomona's VPN, you must first connect to the Internet (using your ISP or a wireless network).
Once you have established an Internet connection, you can then initiate a connection to Pomona's VPN. If you followed the directions listed here, you should have an icon on your desktop called Pomona VPN. (If not, you can gain access to VPN by going into My Network Places and choosing View Network Connections.) Double-click on Pomona VPN. You will get a login box.
You will need to enter CAMPUS\loginname (where loginname is your 8-character Pomona login ID) and your network password. You can save your login and password on your computer so you do not have to enter it in every time you wish to connect; for security reasons, choose Me Only to make the VPN connection available only when your account is logged into the computer.
Finally, click
Connect to attach to Pomona's Virtual Private Network. Once you are connected, you can access Pomona network resources as you would if you were on campus.
Disconnecting from VPN
Before you disconnect from VPN, make sure that all files that reside on network volumes are closed.
Closing your Internet connection (including shutting down or restarting your computer) will disconnect you from VPN. You can also disconnect manually by double-clicking on the Pomona VPN icon on your desktop and clicking
Disconnect.
