What computer should I bring to college?
The short answer to this question is that its entirely a matter of personal preference. It is not even necessary to bring any kind of computer, although you may find it makes some things easier. Read on for more information.
Which computers do ITS support?
ITS supports both Macintoshes and PCs (any brand). However, a computer must meet certain necessary minumum requirements due to security issues. If you're thinking of bringing an old machine from home you might want to check out our
minimum requirements page.
Do I need to bring a computer to college?
No, Pomona does not require that students bring any form of computer with them to college. In fact, some students prefer not to deal with the hassle of having their own computer. There are
multiple large computer labs on campus, each of which is capable of handling whatever your classes can throw at you. For most classes, the only time you'll really need a computer is when you need to write a paper (probably using Microsoft Word). Certain other classes require special software (e.g. SPSS for statistics) that is available in the computer labs.
Do I need to bring a printer to college?
No. While it may be more convenient to have your own personal printer, it is not necessary. Students can print documents at any of the
multiple computer labs if they don't own a printer of their own.
Each student at Pomona has a
print quota which can be used at any of the
multiple computer labs or on any other network printer. Students receive $10 (about 500 black-and-white pages or 40 color pages) each semester, and unused print quota rolls over at the end of the semester. If you should run out of print quota, you can
purchase more from the Pomona Business Office.
You can even print to network printers (e.g. those in the computer labs) from your room. (
Instructions here) However, it
is more convenient to have a personal printer, and many students do bring their own to college. Also, many printers nowadays also function as scanners/copiers, which can be very useful. Just keep in mind that you have to supply your own paper and
ink cartridges.
Do I have to buy a new computer for college?
No, if you already have one laying around that you like to use, feel free to bring that with you, just make sure that it meets our
minimum hardware requirements, or you won't be able to connect to the network or access the internet.
I've decided I want to buy a new computer. What do you I suggest I get?
This is a pretty lengthy discussion. Please take a look at our
computer buying guide for more information.
What kind of things will I be using my computer for in college?
- The thing you will probably be using your computer for the most is writing papers and typing other things for your classes. To do this, you will need a word-processing program, such as Microsoft Word. Word can be provided to you for free by Pomona; you do not need to purchase your own copy. For more information about getting Word, see Licensed Software.
- It is important that you check your e-mail often at college, since the Pomona administration as well as many professors will use it to send important messages to students. You can check your e-mail on lab computers by using WebMail, but it is often more convenient to install an e-mail program, such as Microsoft Outlook, on your own computer.
- Chatting with your friends is an important part of college life. Many students use instant messaging programs (like AIM) to chat online.
- Taking time off and having fun is at least as important as academics. Your computer can also be used to play DVD movies if you have a DVD drive or for playing video games if that's your thing.
What about Linux?
If you managed to install Linux all by yourself, you probably don't need our help with your computer problems. However, ITS does employ some students who use Linux and can help you with any problems you might be having.
