Can I allow other people to access folders in my userspace?

Yes! Windows offers a way to create public folders, but a better (and easier) alternative to this is the Xythos Web File Service, which is basically an online userspace that lets you create shared folders, and allow access to whoever you want, even people outside the Pomona network.

Creating a shared folder in Xythos

  1. Go to http://wfs.pomona.edu. There's a login prompt on the sidebar. Enter your Pomona username and password.
  2. You'll be taken to your Xythos folders. Xythos is separate from your userspace, so if you've never used it before, there won't be anything here. Click the New Directory icon at the top of the page.
  3. Enter a name for this directory and click OK.
  4. Now you'll want to create a group for the students who will be using the directory. Click Contacts and Groups near the bottom of the sidebar.
  5. Click the Create Group icon at the top. Name the group and click OK.
  6. Click the Add New Members icon. You can search for the users either by their usernames (listed above) or by their names (select Display Name or ID, respectively). A list of all users at Pomona matching your search criteria will appear. Check the boxes next to the appropriate students and click Add Contact.
  7. Now that you have the group set up, go back to your main directory by clicking the /(username) link next to the house under My Bookmarks. Next to the folder you just created, click the icon under Share.
  8. At the top of the page, click Add User/Group. This new group should appear under Choose from Your Contacts and click OK.
  9. Make sure the boxes for Read and Write are selected, and click Apply Now

Navigation between directories can be a bit tricky, so the best way to point your students to this folder is to e-mail them the URL of the page. Once they've logged in (using their Pomona username and password), they can bookmark the folder for future reference. To bookmark a folder, click the weird ticket thing next to the lock above the contents of the folder.
