Why is my computer running slowly?

Potential Causes

Spyware

Spyware is the most common culprit for computer slowdown. Consult our spyware section for information on what it is and how to remove it.

Insufficient memory

If your computer is spyware-free and still running slowly, you might not have enough RAM. Determine how much RAM you have, and check out our RAM buying guide if you need to get more. You can also cut down on the amount of RAM used by Windows XP by following these instructions.

Memory-hogging program

Sometimes the culprit for a slow computer is a single program that's seized up and is using all your memory. If your computer is running slowly, bring up the Task Manager and see where all your memory is going.

Fragmented hard drive

Sometimes large files can be broken up across your hard drive, which can slow down your computer when it tries to read them. To fix this problem, you can run a tool in Windows called Disk Defragmenter.

Cluttered hard drive

Over the normal course of your computer's life, it will acquire lots of programs and documents that you may or may not use anymore, even if they're all legitimate. It's generally a good idea to reformat your hard drive once or twice a year to keep this buildup under control. If you've tried our other suggestions and your computer is still runnning slowly, call the ITS Helpdesk at x18062 for assistance with reformatting your computer.
