How to save network passwords in Windows XP

These instructions have been moved to the ITS Knowledge Base [http://helpdesk.pomona.edu].
You will be redirected in a moment.

Whenever your computer tries to reconnect to a Pomona network server such as a mounted network drive or network printer, Windows tries to log on with your Windows account name and password, which, chances are, is not the same as your Pomona username and password (these being the ones you use to check e-mail, etc.). Luckily, you can set specific usernames/passwords for specific servers. Here's how: (I'm going to be adding an entry for network printing as an example)

(Note: This only works in Windows XP Professional. XP Home does not allow you to save network passwords. If you would like to upgrade please contact us. Windows Vista allows you to save U/Ps for specific servers, but the wildcard (*) won't work.)

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts. (If you are in category mode, you will have to click on another User Accounts icon.)
  2. Click on the account that you use
  3. Click on the Manage my network passwords link in the top left corner of the window. The following window should appear:
    Stored User Names and Passwords
  4. Click the Add button and enter CAMPUS\* (this will save your password for all Pomona network servers) or the server's name (for network printing this would be scribe), your username (prefixed by CAMPUS\), and your password.
    Login Information Properties
  5. Hit OK a bunch and you're done!

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will need to change this information whenever you change your Pomona password (every 180 days).
