Router Registration

These instructions have been moved to the ITS Knowledge Base [http://helpdesk.pomona.edu].
You will be redirected in a moment.

  1. Figure out the router's MAC Address. This should be printed on a sticker somewhere on the router itself (usually the bottom). MAC addresses are 6 pairs of digits and numbers, e.g. 01:23:45:67:89:AB
    • If you have a Apple Airport router, you want the one labeled Ethernet ID.
  2. Call ITS at x18062 and tell the person on duty you want to register a router. They will ask for the MAC address you wrote down.
  3. If you are using a wireless router, make sure you read the wireless routers section below.
  4. If you are using Windows, follow the instructions at the bottom of the page.

Router registrations are usually processed within a few days of submission.

Wireless Routers

When setting up your wireless router, you should follow these guidelines:
  • The network name (sometimes referred to as SSID) should be your username (e.g. xyz0200x). Do not name it CINE.
  • You are responsible for all network traffic that originates from your port, so you must use your wireless device's security features (i.e. password protection).
  • You must change the admin password from the default.
  • Your device must not interfere with the official five college wireless network (CINE).

Windows Users

Once your router is registered, you'll be able to access the internet fine. If you want to be able to access network resources, you may need to configure the name resolution service (WINS). (Some routers will do this automatically. If you have problems accessing network resources, then you should follow these instructions.) To do this:

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections (you may have to click "Switch to Classic View" on the left for this to appear)
  2. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties
  3. Double click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) icon
  4. Click the Advanced... button on the bottom-left
  5. Under the DNS tab:
    1. Select Append these DNS suffixes (in order):
    2. Click the Add button below and input pomona.edu and click Add
    3. Repeat the previous step for campus.pomona.edu and res.pomona.edu
  6. Under the WINS tab:
    1. Click the Add... button and enter the WINS IP address, which you can find on this page.
    2. Change the NetBIOS setting from Default to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP

Phew! You're done!
