Note: Full legal mish-mash available here. What follows are human-readable translations.
Does anyone read my e-mail?
No, your e-mail is completely confidential and will never be accessed by another person except during certain extreme circumstances such as court subpoena or critical hardware breakdown. ITS student employees are never given access to the mail servers or other students' accounts and/or passwords (which is one of the main reasons that we cannot give first-year students their login information early).
If you wish, you can read the full legal mish-mash
disclaimer. (See the section entitled "Security And Confidentiality Standards")
Pomona does use an automatic spam-filtering service that scans all incoming e-mail and quarantines those that are suspected to be unsolicited kruft. This is a completely automated process; at no time does a person view the contents of your mail. For more information, please see our
Postini information page.
If you have any further questions please e-mail us at
supers@pomona.edu.
Does anyone monitor what I look at on the internet?
No, ITS does not monitor or log your behavior on the internet. This does not mean that you are free from surveillance, however - if you share copyrighted material over the internet you are still visible to enforcement authorities such as the RIAA and MPAA and may be sued appropriately. ITS passes on all such suits directly to the infringing student.
NOTE: ITS does monitor how
much you have uploaded/downloaded daily, and will send you a nasty e-mail if you exceed the (very generous)
transfer caps, suggesting that you share a little bandwidth with the rest of the 5Cs.
Who has access to my userspace?
Only you have access to your userspace. In rare instances, senior network staff may investigate "
when a system-related problem requires such entry." If you want to share specific files with other students or faculty,
create a shared folder in Xythos.
