Creating a New Connection
To set up VPN, you first need to create a New Connection in the Internet Connect application. To do this, open the
Applications folder and double-click on the
Internet Connect icon.
- Once the Internet Connect application is open, select
File and click New VPN Connection... .
- A window will appear titled "Your computer needs to be set up to make VPN connections."
- Click on the button next to
PPTP and click the Continue button.
- A new icon will appear at the top of the Internet Connect window named
VPN (PPTP) .
- Youll now need to configure VPN. Click on the button next to
Configuration: and select Edit Configurations... from the menu that appears.
- Description: can be filled in however you want
- Under Server Address: type in vpn.pomona.edu
- Under Account Name: type in your Pomona username (i.e. "xyz02005")
- Under User Authentication: the Password button should be selected and type in your Pomona password
- Click the OK button
Check the Show VPN Status in Menu Bar option for easy access.
VPN is now configured and ready for you to connect! If you have an internet connection, you can click the
Connect button to establish a connection immediately after youve configured the Internet Connect Application.
Connecting to the VPN Server
VPN does not establish Internet access; to use Pomonas VPN, you must first connect to the Internet.
Once you have established an Internet connection, you can then initiate a connection to Pomonas VPN. If you have configured VPN according to the instructions above, you should see this icon (the VPN Menu) in the top right hand part of your screen.
Pull down the
VPN Menu and choose
Connect
When you are connected, the VPN menu icon will show the status of your connection.
Once you have established a connection to VPN, you can access Pomona Network resources (such as your userspace, classes volume, department web publishing volumes, etc.) as you would if you were on campus.
Disconnecting from VPN
Before you disconnect from VPN, make sure that you have unmounted any Pomona network volumes. To unmount a network volume, drag it to the trash. When the network volume no longer appears on your desktop, it is safe to disconnect from VPN.
Shutting down or restarting your computer will disconnect you from VPN. You can also disconnect manually by pulling down the
VPN menu and choosing
Disconnect .
You have now disconnected from VPN.
