How do I set up Outlook to use Exchange?

If you haven't yet installed Outlook (Pomona gives it out for free), now is a good time. In order to setup Outlook in Exchange mode you must have Outlook 2003.

Setting up an Exchange account

NOTE: If you are running Outlook for the first time, this process will look slightly different. Skip to Step 4.

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel. (If you see the words "Pick a category" in big type at the top of the window, click the Switch to Classic View on the left side of the screen.) Now double-click the Mail icon.

  2. Select the option that says E-mail Accounts...

  3. Now you'll be asked to choose an option. Make sure Add a new e-mail account is selected, and click Next.

  4. You've chosen to use an Exchange server, so select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Next.

  5. Where it asks for the name of the Exchange server, enter evsstudent.campus.pomona.edu. (If you are a faculty member, enter mapi.pomona.edu.) Make sure the Use cached Exchange mode box is checked. Enter your xyz0200x user name in the appropriate field.

  6. Click on the More Settings button near the bottom. You may get an error message. This is normal. Click OK, then in the next box to pop up, click Cancel. The correct box should appear now.

  7. Choose the Connections tab. At the bottom, check the box marked Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP. Then click the button below this labeled Exchange Proxy Settings...

  8. A new window should pop up. Edit the options so your window looks like the one pictured below, and click OK in this window and in the one pictured above. You should now be back to the first window that popped up. Click Next. When a little question window pops up asking if you wish to continue, click Yes.

  9. Click Finish to close out the wizard. The first window should still be hovering in the background. Click the E-mail Accounts... button again.
  10. A login window will pop up. Enter your Pomona username and password. Click OK.

  11. The window that pops up now should have View or change existing accounts automatically selected. Click OK. Delete any other accounts that may be here, and select your Pomona account where it says Deliver new e-mail to the following location. Click Finish and close your mail windows.

That's it! When you launch Outlook, your Pomona e-mail will appear in your inbox.
