What is Norton AntiVirus?

Norton is one of the three PC antivirus programs supported by Pomona. Pomona does not provide copies of Norton, though ITS does provide support for it. It can be purchased from most software stores, or ordered online.

How do I install Norton Antivirus?

Note: These instructions were written using the trial version of Norton AntiVirus. The process may be slightly different for the full version of the program.
  1. If you bought a hard copy of the program, insert your installer CD. If you downloaded the program, the installation should begin automatically. You should see the following screen. Click Next to proceed.

  2. The next screen is one of those giant End User License Agreements that no one ever really reads. Choose I accept the License Agreement, then click Next.

  3. (At this point in the process, the full version will ask for your Product Key, which should be on the back of your CD case. Enter it and click Next to get to the screen below.) Now the installer will request that you perform a preliminary virus scan. This is highly recommended, as existing viruses can create problems for new virus software. Click Start Scan. This may take a little while, depending on how much there is to find. Once Norton has decided that your computer is clean enough to proceed, click Next.

  4. The installer now prompts you to choose the folder where Norton will be installed. Unless you have some particular reason not to, click Next to install the program in the default folder.
    nortondestination.PNG

  5. Progress bar of doom! Nothing much to do on this step, so you can go check your mail or take a nap or something while the actual installation happens.
    nortoninstalling.PNG

  6. All done! Yay! Generally, it's a good idea to restart your computer now. However, if you're also installing other things, such as Windows Updates, that will require your computer to be restarted, waiting to do so until you've finished installing everything can streamline that process. Choose whether you will restart now or later, and click Next.

  7. Once you've restarted, Norton will automatically pop up to finish setup. Click Next on the welcome screen.
    nortonpostrestart.PNG
  8. If you're using the trial version, you'll see this screen, which should have Try the product for 15 more days already selected. Click Next. If you're using the full version, this screen will ask you to activate and register your product.

  9. Norton will often fight with other security software, which can cause problems. The best thing to do is to simply let Norton rule the roost. Leave these boxes checked and click Next.

  10. This little window pops up as Norton finishes setting itself up. It will go away once it's done.
    nortonconfiguring.PNG

  11. Almost there! Click Finish to get on with the next step.
    nortonthankyou.PNG

  12. It seems a bit pointless to update software you've just installed, but companies tend to release all sorts of nifty and/or essential additions to the software after it's been released, so it's best to add these all at once the first time you use it. Norton will launch this process automatically. Click Next to begin.
    liveupdatestart.PNG

  13. After poking around its database for a moment, the window will show the updates you need to install. All of them should be automatically selected; click Next to download and install them all.
    liveupdatefoundupdates.PNG

  14. While Norton is updating, a window like this one may pop up. This is normal and doesn't require you to do anything; it will go away once it's finished doing whatever it may be doing.
    nortonupdating.png

  15. Norton may ask you to run LiveUpdate again. Click OK, and don't forget to run it again before running a virus scan.
    liveupdaterunagain.PNG

  16. Your Norton AntiVirus? should now be up to date. Click Finish to complete the installation.

  17. You must now restart your computer. Click OK.

How do I use Norton AntiVirus? ?

  1. You can open Norton three ways: by clicking on the icon in the system tray, by clicking on the icon on the desktop, or by going to Start > All Programs > Norton AntiVirus > Norton AntiVirus 2005. When it opens, you should get the following screen:
    nortonmainscreen.PNG
This will call your attention to anything that's amiss. In this case, Norton is informing me that I haven't yet completed a full scan of my computer, and that I haven't yet paid for my copy of the software. To begin a virus scan, click Scan for Viruses.

  2. You can choose to scan only certain locations, or your whole computer. Unless you're searching for a specific piece of malware, you should select Scan my computer to search all directories.
    nortonscanningmain.PNG

  3. This is the screen that you will see while the scan is in progress. Unfortunately there's no progress bar, so it's hard to know exactly how much time is left. The good news is that it scans alphabetically, so the current item will give you a clue of how far you have to go. A complete scan will generally take around twenty minutes to half an hour. Emptying your browser cache before beginning the scan will make this process go faster. Norton will deal with some threats as it finds them, so you'll see the numbers beside "Detected," "Fixed," and "Deleted" rise as corrupted files are encountered.
    nortonscanning.PNG

  4. Once the scan is complete, Norton will automatically direct you to the best way for dealing with anything it finds. Generally, this is deletion. Click Delete to get rid of everything that Norton suggests.
    nortonrepairwizard.PNG

  5. Norton will now warn you against deleting anything. Don't mind Norton, it's slightly schizo. Click OK to finish deleting the bad stuff.
    nortondeletewarning.PNG

  6. Now you will see a summary of everything Norton did. Don't be surprised if most of this doesn't make sense. Click Finish.

Your computer should now be virus-free. If you're still having problems, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at x18062 for more assistance.

  3. Click Next to install the updates. Click Finish to close the updater when it finishes. Restart your computer if you need to.

  4. If your subscription to Norton Anti-Virus updates has expired, you will need to either uninstall Norton and install McAfee or renew your subscription. (We would recommend the former as ITS can provide you with a copy of McAfee for free.) Please completely remove Norton Anti-Virus before installing McAfee Anti-Virus, as the two programs running at the same time can cause conflicts and make your system unstable.
    • To uninstall Norton, click on Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Click once on Norton AntiVirus in the list that appears and then click the Remove button on the right.
    • Next, click Remove All to uninstall Norton AntiVirus.

    • After removing the program, you will need to restart your computer. Save any open work and close all programs before restarting your computer. After you restart, you should install McAfee Antivirus.
