ITS Minimum System Requirements

Pomona used to have serious problems with infected computers and worms running amok through the network. Having your computer taken over by a virus is never fun. Plus, the 20 or so people your machine will spread it to won't be thanking you either. For this reason, ITS now requires that student machines be running certain software for protection. Here's the list:

(Note: These are the minimum requirements. Computers meeting these specs will be able to register and perform basic tasks (word processing, e-mail, simple web browsing, etc.). However, they will not be able to perform many more advanced tasks.)

Requirements (PC)

  • Your computer must be running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista. If you're running an older operating system (such as Windows 98), ITS can upgrade you to either Windows 2000 or Windows XP for free. Here are the requirements for doing so. (If you don't know how to check these values, see our system information page.)
    • Windows 2000: 64MB of RAM, a 3GB or larger hard drive, and a CD-ROM drive (if you don't have one, we can still install the OS, but you need to have at least 2GB of free space on your hard drive).
    • Windows XP: 128MB of RAM, a 3GB or larger hard drive, and a CD-ROM drive (or 2GB of free hard drive space).
    • Windows Vista: 512MB of RAM, a 20GB or larger hard drive, and a DVD-ROM drive
  • Your computer must be running a supported anti-virus program. If you do not have one of the supported programs, we can install McAfee VirusScan for free.
  • Your computer needs to have an ethernet port, or be equipped with an ethernet card that supplies one.

Requirements (Macintosh)

  • Your Mac must be capable of running OS X version 10.3 or newer. ITS can upgrade your machine to a newer version of OS X for free, provided it meets Apple's minimum system requirements. For 10.3, the requirements are as follows:
    • A G3, G4, G5 Processor
    • Built-in USB
    • 128 MB of RAM (256 Recommended)
  • Your computer needs to have an ethernet port, or be equipped with an ethernet card that supplies one.
