How do I use McAfee Antivirus?

  1. Right click the McAfee Icon in the System Tray and select On-Demand Scan....

  2. You will see this screen. By default, McAfee performs a complete scan of your computer. You can browse for a specific location or choose to limit the types of files you want McAfee to scan for. However, we strongly recommend that you let McAfee perform a complete scan, so you can catch anything that might be hiding in an unexpected location. Once you've made your selections, click Start.

  3. Once the scan has begun, the following window will appear. The progress bar will fill up, and once the scan finishes, you can click Close to close the window.

  4. In the event that the scan finds a virus, the following window will appear. McAfee will attempt to clean the file. Don't worry if some files couldn't be cleaned; cleaning only works on partially corrupted files, which aren't really popular among virus writers anymore. If it cannot clean it, it will generally be moved to a quarantined location, and you can select the file and click Delete to delete it.

If you still experience a virus problem after running McAfee, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at x18062.

Automatic protection with McAfee

One of the nice things about anti-virus programs is their ability to actively block malicious content from reaching your computer. If McAfee encounters a virus or trojan attempting to install itself on your computer, it will display the same window that appears during the scan, informing you that the file has been encountered and dealt with. We recommend running a complete virus scan if the active protection finds anything, to ensure that there are no other viruses or trojans hiding in your computer. These things often come in several pieces, so it's a very good idea to scan your computer and make sure nothing has been left behind.

Keeping McAfee up-to-date

By default, McAfee will automatically check for updates daily at 5:00PM, but if you want to manually check for updates, follow these instructions.

  1. Right click the McAfee Icon in the System Tray and select Update Now....

  2. The following Update window will appear, and the update will be downloaded and installed. Once it is finished, you can either close the window by clicking Close or, if you wait for about 30 seconds, the window will auto-close. Sometimes the update will ask you to restart once it is complete, but usually, once the window is closed, the update is complete.
