Connecting to VPN from a Macintosh running OS 10.2 (Jaguar)
VPN is an extra layer that runs on top of your regular network connection. You need to first establish a connection to the Internet and then to the VPN server before you can access the services available through Pomona’s VPN.
Note: If you are a faculty or staff member connecting through Pomona's modem pool, you do not need to use VPN.
Connecting to the VPN Server
VPN does not establish Internet access; to use Pomona’s VPN, you must first connect to the Internet.
Once you have established an Internet connection, you can then initiate a connection to Pomona’s VPN. To do this:
- Open the
Applications folder and double-click on the Internet Connect icon.
- Pull down the
File menu and choose New VPN Connection.
- If this is your first time connecting to VPN, then you will need to enter
vpn.pomona.edu for the server name and use your normal Pomona username and password. If you have already configured the VPN settings, then your information should be saved. If your password is not in the Keychain, type your password.
- Click
Connect.
Your Mac will now be connected to the VPN server. The Connect button in the VPN Connection Window will change to a Disconnect button.
Once you have established a connection to VPN, you can access Pomona Network resources (such as your userspace, classes volume, department web publishing volumes, etc.) as you would if you were on campus.
Disconnecting from VPN
Before you disconnect from VPN, make sure that you have unmounted any Network volumes. To unmount a Network volume, drag it to the trash. When the Network volume no longer appears on your desktop, it is safe to disconnect from VPN.
Shutting down or restarting your computer will disconnect you from VPN. You can also disconnect manually:
- Return to the Internet Connect application in the Applications folder
- Click the
Disconnect button
- Quit the Internet Connect application
You have now disconnected from VPN.
