Internet Access

You can get (free) internet access from two places:

• The Pomona network
• CINE, the 5C wireless network

Both networks require registration before they can be used.

Both networks are connected to the same internet connection, which is a dual fiber connection routed through HMC (in other words, it's faster than anything else you've ever used before), however, with great power comes great responsibility (see transfer limits below).

While you are protected to some degree by Pomona's firewall, you are not immune from viruses and spyware - tread carefully.

Transfer limits

ITS caps acceptable daily use at:

• 6 GB (gigabytes) downloaded per day.

• 2 GB (gigabytes) uploaded per day.

ITS implements these caps in order to provide the campus community with appropriate network response times, thus protecting all users from excessive bandwidth usage by anyone individual.

If you exceed the download/upload limit your internet access will be revoked until you can show that you're capable of sharing bandwidth with everyone else at the 5Cs.

If you are using a filesharing program, capping your upload speed to 24 KB/s or less will allow you to leave it on 24/7 without exceeding the daily limit.

Do transfers within the network count?

No, if you are simply transferring files from one computer on the Claremont network to another, this does not count towards your internet allowance.

How can I tell how much I've uploaded/downloaded today?

Neither Windows nor OS X support this kind of tracking in an easily-accessible way, so your best bet if your really interested is to find one of the many bandwidth monitoring programs out there. Normal websurfing/e-mail will never exceed this amount.
