Ethernet port

These instructions have been moved to the ITS Knowledge Base [http://helpdesk.pomona.edu].
You will be redirected in a moment.

Computers use ethernet ports to connect to networks. If you want to connect to the Pomona network (so you can surf the internet, share files, etc.), your computer must have an ethernet port. Almost all ethernet ports look like this:

They look very similar to modem (phone line) ports, although they are slightly larger and have 8 gold pins instead of 4.

Ethernet ports are usually marked with these symbols:

How to locate your ethernet port

  • Desktop: Unless you have a very, very old desktop, it will have an ethernet port. Look at the rear of your machine. You should see a bunch of sockets and ports (your mouse, keyboard, and printer should all connect here). Look for something similar to the above picture.

  • Laptop: Most laptops sold these days (the last six or seven years) have ethernet ports, but some older ones do not. The easiest way to check if your laptop has an ethernet port is to just hunt for something that looks like the above picture along the sides or rear of the machine (the location will vary by manufacturer).
    • Note: Some laptops have "hidden" or "stealthed" ethernet ports that pop out when you press a button. They usually look something like this. If you think you might have one of these but can't find it, check your laptop's manual.

If you don't have an ethernet port

You can easily buy an ethernet expansion card that will give you one. These typically run between $20 and $40. More information...
