Ethernet cable
a.k.a. patch cable, network cable, LAN cable...
Ethernet cables connect computers to local area networks (LANs) - for example, the
Pomona Residential Network (ResNet).

While ethernet cables go by many names, they are
not crossover cables which
look the same but are wired differently.
Buying a cable?
Ethernet cables should be sold at any tech store worth its microchips, including Circuit City, Best Buy, Radio Shack, CompUSA, and even
Huntley Bookstore, although Huntley is always closed on move-in day

. Prices range from $4-$25 depending on length and vendor.
Ethernet cables come in different
categories:
- Cat3 - don't use this
- Cat5 - works just fine
- Cat5e - also works fine (contrary to popular belief, does not have a longer range than Cat5)
- Cat6 - waste of money, but works fine
The
length doesn't matter from technological perspective. However, a 25 ft length is a safe bet since it allows you to route the cable halfway around your dorm room if necessary (it frequently is).
