Don't know which one to choose? Read below...

Which protocol?

There are two ways to treat your e-mail:

  • Leave it on the server (recommended) - your messages stay stored on the ITS servers, which means that you can access them from anywhere, including webmail or other computers. However, your inbox will eventually fill up if you don't delete any e-mail.
  • Download it to your computer - Once downloaded, they can only be accessed from one place - that specific computer. However, you don't really have to worry about filling up your inbox.

These two concepts correspond to the following protocols (depending on what program you're using):

  Outlook/Entourage Thunderbird
Leave it on the server Exchange IMAP
Download it POP3 POP3
More information on the different protocols...

Which program?

We have instructions for 3 programs:

Program Platform How to get it
Outlook Windows Install Microsoft Office (free from Pomona)
Entourage OS X (Mac) Install Microsoft Office (free from Pomona)
Thunderbird Both Download it (free)
warning Mac users: We don't recommend using OS X Mail. It misbehaves when connecting to our servers and tends to crash a lot.

Outlook/Entourage support some slightly fancier features such as integrated calendaring and scheduled tasks. Thunderbird is a light-weight, slightly more stable client with a nice, clean interface.
