Do you have some tips for reducing the size of my inbox?
Yes indeedy. To help you figure out what to delete, you can
use SquirrelMail to find out which of your folders is using up the most space.
1.) Delete extremely large e-mails
These types of mail tend to have large attachments clipped onto them. Try sorting your inbox by message size and deleting the largest ones.
In either
webmail or an e-mail program such as
Outlook or
Thunderbird, click the top of the column marked
Size. You may have to click it again to get them in descending (largest ones first) order.
2.) Empty your Sent Items folder
Your e-mail account probably saves a copy of every e-mail you send, which can occupy tons of space on the server. Look for a folder marked "Sent," select all the messages in it by hitting Ctrl-A (Cmd-A on a Mac), and press Delete. This moves all your sent messages to your trash can, where you can deal with them as described below.
3.) Empty your Deleted Items folder
You should also empty your Deleted Items folder.
Webmail:
- If you're using Internet Explorer, right-click on the Deleted Items folder and select Empty Deleted Items.
- If you're not using Internet Explorer, click on the
Empty Deleted Items button near the top.
Outlook:
- Go to Tools > Empty "Deleted Items" Folder
Thunderbird:
- Click on the Deleted Items folder in the left sidebar (this is where webmail puts deleted e-mails).
- Select one of the messages in the Deleted Items folder, and then press CTRL + A on a PC or Apple + A on a Mac to select all the messages in the folder. Then press Delete to send the messages to your Trash folder.
- Right-click on the Trash folder and select Empty Trash (this is where Thunderbird puts deleted e-mails).
- Close Thunderbird properly so that the changes will be reflected on the server.
Entourage:
- CTRL + click on the Deleted Items folder in your Pomona e-mail account on the left sidebar and select Empty Deleted Items.
