You can only create a partition if you have free, unpartitioned space available. If you don't have this space and want to partition your drive, please contact ITS at x18062. We have several tools available to help you do this. You'll want to
back up your files before you start messing around on your hard drive.
If you have unpartitioned space available, we have instructions below for both PC and Mac for how to create a new partition.

Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. On the side bar, select the Disk Management option. This will show you a summary of your drives and their partitions. Available space will be indicated by a bright green bar. Right-click on the available space and select New Logical Drive...
A wizard will open that guides you through the necessary steps for creation of the partition. You will be asked to select the size, desired drive letter, and name of the new partition, and to decide if you want to format the partition. (You probably should.) The partition will then be formatted; the time this will take depends on the size of the partition and on whether you chose a quick or a full format. Once this is done, you'll be able to store files on your new partition as if it were a separate hard drive.

To partition a hard drive, open up the Disk Utility. You will see a list of each physical drive currently connected to your computer on the left hand side, along with a list of the current partitions for each of those drives. Select the physical drive that you wish to partition and click on the partition tab at the top of the window.
Now, you can choose how many partitions you want to create on the drive. Under Volume Scheme:, select whether you want to keep the drive partitioned as it currently is by selecting Current or choose the number of partitions you want. The gray box will change accordingly as you adjust the number of partitions. You can select each partition by clicking on that part of the box. You can then provide a name, choose the file system, and change the size of the partition. When you have set up the partitions the way you want them, click the partition button.
You have now partitioned the drive. If this is an externally connected hard drive, then the new partitions will appear on the desktop.
