How do I access a network share?

warning Important: You must be connected to the Pomona network. If you are connected to CINE (wireless) or are at home, first set up a VPN connection with Pomona.

In order to connect to a share you need to know the path to it.

Paths look like this:

Windows   \\server name\folder\subfolder\subsubfolder\
OS X (Mac)   smb://server name/folder/subfolder/subsubfolder/

For example, the path to your userspace is

Windows   \\campus.pomona.edu\pomona\userspace\student-<year>\<username>
OS X (Mac)   smb://fargo.pomona.edu/Students/<year>/<username>
where <year> is the year you arrived at Pomona (e.g. 2006) and <username> is your username (e.g. ces02006).

TIP Note: These instructions are for quick, one-time connections. If you're going to be using this share a lot and want it to be available after you restart your computer, see here.

Windows XP

  1. Go to Start > Run
  2. Type in the path, and hit enter

If you're connecting to an official ITS server (e.g. tempdisk, your userspace), log in with CAMPUS\ + your username and password.

An explorer window should appear. Use it as you would My Computer. You can drag/drop (and copy/paste) files to and from this place just as if it were any other folder on your computer. The connection closes when you close the window.

If you don't want to have to log in every time you connect to an ITS share, you can save your username and password.

Mac OS XMac OS X

  1. Click on Finder (the smiling face) on your dock and select Go > Connect to Server... (alternatly, hit Apple + K).
  2. Type in the path and hit enter.

If you're connecting to an official ITS server (e.g. tempdisk, your userspace), log in with your username and password. Make sure that Workgroup or Domain is set to CAMPUS:

The share should appear on the upper-left corner of your Finder windows (see picture below). You can drag/drop (and copy/paste) files to and from this place just as if it were any other folder on your computer. The connection closes when you click the small eject icon to the right of the share name:

It's not working!

  • If you're connected over wireless (CINE), then you must first set up a VPN connection with the Pomona network.
  • If you're connecting to an ITS share, try adding .pomona.edu to the name of the share (e.g. fargo3 becomes fargo3.pomona.edu)
  • If you're using Windows, try restarting your computer. Windows may be attempting to log in with incorrect previously-entered credentials.
  • If you're using Windows and are behind a router, follow the "Windows Users" instructions at the bottom of this page.
  • If you know the IP address of the server, you can connect to it using that:
    • \\134.173.x.x
    • smb://134.173.x.x
  • In Mac OS X, you may have trouble connecting to Windows computers if they're not in the same subnet as yours.
You will be able to connect to official Pomona systems by machine name (smb://machine). This form will also work for computers that are in the same subnet. However, for computers that are in a different subnet (a computer on North Campus if you're on South Campus), this will not work. If you know the IP address of the computer, you can connect to it by specifying its IP (smb://x.x.x.x).
