How to setup an Airport Express for use in your dorm room
- The first thing to do is reset your Airport Express to its factory default settings. To do this: Use the end of a straightened paper clip to press and hold the reset button for ten seconds. The LED should start flashing.
- Your Airport Express should have come with a CD with some software on it, called the Airport Setup Assistant. The OS X version is installed to Applications/Utilities, and the XP version can be launched after installation from
Start > All Programs > Airport Express Assistant . From here on out, the setup process for Windows and OS X is identical.
- Press the
Continue button at the bottom of the welcome screen.
- Select
Set up a new Airport Base Station and click Continue .
- You will be prompted to select your Wireless Access point. It should detect the appropriate one automatically. The one you are looking for will be
Apple Network XXXXXX (where X is a letter or number). Click Continue after you've selected the proper access point.
- A window may pop up asking you to Update to a newer version of Airport Firmware. Click
Update.
- On the next page, select
Create a new wireless network and click Continue.
- Select
My Airport Express is plugged into a home router and click Continue.
- You will then be prompted to name your network. Your network name should be your Pomona login name (something resembling
XYZ02004 ). You can set your Airport Express name to whatever you want, but you will probably want to also set it to your Pomona login name for simplicity. Click Continue once you've named everything.
- This is the security page. You will want to set up your Airport Express with WPA or WPA2 Personal (this password is required if you want to use your Airport Express on the Pomona Network!). Set the password, then click
Continue .
- The default settings on the next page are correct. Click
Continue.
- The next page asks you to set an administrator password for your Airport Express. Don't leave it blank! You're almost done!
- This page confirms your settings. If everything is correct, click
Continue.
- Your Airport will reset. If you have it connected to your wall jack, after it reboots the LED should eventually turn green.
Congratulations! You now have an Airport Express ready to connect to the Pomona Network!
If you connect to the internet through the Airport Express, you will have to get the Airport Express manually registered before you can connect to the internet through it. You can do this by sending an email to
helpdesk@pomona.edu with your name, a phone number we can contact you at, and the
MAC Address of the Airport Express. You will still need to go through the registration process for your ethernet port on your computer to register the ethernet card.
